Types of Lenses for Sunglasses

While all sunglasses protect the eyes from ultraviolet (UV) rays, not all sunglass lenses are created equal. To help you determine which is best suited for you, we’re taking a closer look at some of the most popular types of sunglass lenses.

Polarized Lenses

Polarized lenses are one of the most popular on the market. The lenses are equipped with a special filter that blocks horizontal light waves that bounce off of flat surfaces. This improves visual contrast and clarity and is especially helpful in reducing glare from water. However, polarized lenses are not ideal for every instance. Those same filters that block the lights also blur images from liquid crystal display (LCD) screens so they shouldn’t be worn if what you’re doing is dependant upon those LCD screens.

Mirrored Lenses

Mirrored lenses are more than just a trendy feature. The mirrored coating reflects up to 60% more light than the average sunglass lens, often resulting in a wider field of vision. While mirrored lenses do not cause the same blurry images of LCD screens, they also do not offer the same amount of visual contrast and clarity as polarized lenses.

Prescription Lenses

Prescription sunglass lenses are an excellent option for people who need vision correction and sun protection at the same time. They provide many of the same benefits as regular sun lenses and you can typically get the polarized coating as an add on. Our prescription sunglasses are available with single vision, progressive, and reading correction.
