Star Wars™ Day: May the 4th Be With You!

Amanda Schafer

The sayings, “May the 4th Be With You” and “Happy Star Wars Day” are the salutations that fans and families around the world use to greet each other every May 4th aka Star Wars Day. This fan holiday is a chance for young and old, Rebels and Imperials, droids and Wookiees to recognize and celebrate their mutual enthusiasm for the beloved Star Wars brand that has been a major force in our culture for over four decades!

Star Wars Day

The History of Star Wars Day

The phrase dates back to May 4, 1979 when Margaret Thatcher became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Her political party put out an ad in the London Evening News that said, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.” Since then, fans of the epic space saga ‘borrowed’ the phrase as a pun to the famous line “May the Force be with you” and applied it to their annual Star Wars festivities. The rest is galactic history.

How to Celebrate Star Wars Day

  • Binge Watch Star Wars Movies
With numerous films to choose from, a Star Wars movie marathon is the perfect way to kick-off your May the 4th holiday whether you are revisiting your favorites or watching with someone who is discovering the story for the first time.. Grab some Star Wars snacks and get comfy in your Star Wars gear – this will be a day long remembered.
  • Attend a Star Wars Event
There are plenty of in-person and virtual events to celebrate on Star Wars Day while staying safe with your fellow fans!
  • Make Star Wars Themed Snacks
Get creative with recipes inspired by the characters, vehicles and planets of the Star Wars galaxy. Wookie cookies anyone? There are tons of creative treats to be made and to try at your local grocer.
  • Get Decked Out in Star Wars Gear
It’s time to ignite your Hasbro lightsabers, don a Darth Vader or Mandalorian mask, and represent your favorite Star Wars heroes and villains. Have a contest with your friends or family to see who can assemble for the best photoshoot and share your creativity online with the hashtag #MayThe4thBeWithYou and #StarWarsDay.

Star Wars Day is all about celebrating and passing along the Star Wars story. Your kids will get a kick out of our Star Wars eyeglasses and eyeglass cases that will make them feel a part of the festivities and are a stylish way to show their Star Wars fandom. “Your eyes can deceive you,” but not while wearing these out-of-this world glasses!
