Steps to Measuring for Your Face Shape

Use a tape measure to take the following measurements in millimeters. Write the results down as you go to reference later.

  1. Forehead Width: Measure the width of your forehead at the widest part.
  2. Cheekbone Width: Measure from the top of one cheekbone to the other.
  3. Jawbone Length: Measure from the base of one side of your jaw to the tip of your chin.
  4. Face Height: Measure from the bottom of your chin to your hairline.

Types of Face Shapes

There are five main face shapes: oval, round, heart, square, and diamond. Now that you’ve measured your face, apply those measurements to find your face shape.

Oval Face Shape

Oval Face Shapes

If the height of your face is noticeably longer than the width, then you most likely have an oval-shaped face.

Round Face Shape

Round Face Shapes

If the height of your face is similar to the width and you have a curved chin, then you have a round-shaped face. Your forehead and jaw should be more narrow than your cheeks.

Heart Face Shape

Heart Face Shapes

If your forehead is about the same as your cheekbones and significantly wider than your chin, then your face is considered heart shaped. Many people with heart-shaped faces also have widow’s peaks at the hairline and a chin that comes to a point.

Square Face Shape

Square Face Shapes

If the height and width of your face are nearly identical and your jaw and forehead measurements are close to your cheek measurement, then you have a square-shaped face.

If your cheeks are wider than your forehead and jaw and your chin comes to a distinct point, then you have a face that’s diamond shaped.
